The beaches of Sri Lanka have become nesting places for turtles and there are about ten locations on the coastline, mostly in the South, where turtles come to lay eggs. The Wildlife Protection Society of Sri Lanka operates the famous turtle hatchery at Kosgoda on the South coast.
Eighteen hatcheries operate on the South coast, thousands of turtle eggs are hatched and the young released to the sea annually, from these hatcheries. These conservation programs have become a major tourist attraction.
